Dropbox Backup and Restore for iOS 8 Users


Please read this page if…

  1. your iPhone and/or iPad is running iOS 8
  2. you have used the Dropbox Backup/Restore feature in Settings.

The Problem: The existing version of Prayer Prompter’s Dropbox Backup and Restore feature uses Dropbox API v1 (Application Program Interface version 1.) It is going to stop working on 6/28/2017 because Dropbox has replaced it with API v2. As a result, we are revising the programming code in Prayer Prompter to use Dropbox API v2 for devices running iOS 9 and iOS 10. Unfortunately, we do not have the resources to continue supporting devices running iOS 8.

Solutions: In order to keep using the Dropbox Backup and Restore feature, you have two options.

  1. Update your existing device(s) to iOS 10, if possible.
    • Devices not compatible with iOS 10.

      • iPhone 4S and older.

      • iPad with Retina Display (3rd Gen) and older 9.7-inch iPads.

      • iPad Mini.

      • The iPod Touch 5th-generation and older iPod Touch models.

  2. Get a new or used device that is running iOS 9 or iOS 10.

If you update your existing device to iOS 10, and you update Prayer Prompter (either by auto-update or by visiting the App Store and doing a manual update) with a newer version that says it supports Dropbox V2, then your Dropbox Backup and Restore should work as normal (first time using Dropbox’s V2 API from Prayer Prompter will require you to authenticate to Dropbox).

If however, you get a device that is running iOS 9 or iOS 10, then the timing of that acquisition influences what your options are. If it’s before the Dropbox V1 cutoff, you can follow the instructions above for an updated iOS level. However, if you wait until after Dropbox turns off the V1 API, then your only option to preserve Prayer Prompter’s current content will require you to perform an iTunes backup to copy all of your content including Prayer Prompter from your old device to the new one. (An iCloud backup will NOT suffice, as iCloud only backs up only “the most important data on your iPhone/iPad to iCloud,” which will NOT include Prayer Prompter’s data). In the interest of clarity, the iTunes backup scenario is as follows:

Plug your device into your computer and use iTunes to “Manually Back Up and Restore.” This process (backup from your old device and restore to your new device) will copy everything including Prayer Prompter from your old device to restore it to your new device.

Summary: You are running iOS 8 on your iPhone and/or iPad and…

  • Dropbox Backup and Restore will stop working after 6/28/2017.
    • You will not be able to backup to Dropbox.
    • You will not be able to restore from a previous Dropbox backup.
  • You should upgrade to iOS 9 or 10 as soon as possible. (This may involve getting a newer iPhone and/or iPad if you existing device will not support iOS 9 or later.)
  • If you get a newer device, you should use iTunes “Backup and Restore” to move all of your content including Prayer Prompter from your old device to your new device.
